Luke places the emphasis on Jesus as the Greatest Man.
Luke also tells us what kind of human mind-set we must have in order to serve Jesus.
7 is the number of completion. There are 7 days in a week. There is no natural cycle of 7 days in Nature. Genesis has 7 days in which God created life on earth. This is our only reason for a 7 day week. The French during their godless Revolution in the late 1700s tried to make a 10 day week but it failed. No-one has successfully changed God’s 7 day week.
6 is the number of man. Man was created on the sixth day.
Man has sin in his life and is thus one short of completion. All the unpleasantness and agonies of life on Earth are due to the presence of sin.
So mankind needs a new way of thinking to cope with this sinful environment.
Luke opens up a new idea that God will turn away from the Jews and turn to the Gentiles. But those Gentiles have to learn how to think God’s way. God needs to cleanse us from sin and then dwell within our hearts to control us so that we can be part of His Big Picture, His hidden plan of salvation that the world seems to easily miss.
Luke has many clues hidden away in his Gospel that relate to the Gentile church.
The seven church ages, spread over two thousand years, is the great mystery that the Jews missed in the Old Testament.
Chapter 6 starts with the disciples who were hungry and who thus picked a few handfuls of corn from a field and ate them. The Pharisees, who hated Jesus, grabbed this opportunity to claim that they were working on the sabbath day and breaking the Jewish law of Moses.
LUKE 6:1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
LUKE 6:2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
Jesus then referred them to a strange incident in the Bible where David had got hungry and ate the shewbread in the holy place that only the priests were allowed to eat. God never punished David for doing this.
LUKE 6:3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;
LUKE 6:4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
Jesus has now caught out the Pharisees. They would not want to admit why God allowed David to get away with this act. Alternatively, they probably did not know why God allowed this. In that case they would have to admit that they were ignorant of the meaning of the Scripture. They did not want to do that either.
David’s act in the Old Testament was reflecting the future Messiah of the New Testament.
Each of the Old Testament prophets acted out a portion of the ministry of Christ, the future Messiah.
So David was anointed as king by the prophet Samuel when he was still a boy but could not become king until the opposition, king Saul, had been killed.
Christ was anointed as King by the Holy Ghost that descended and remained upon Him, when He came out of the Jordan after being baptized by the prophet John the Baptist. But He will only take over as crowned King when the enemy, the beast and the false prophet are thrown into the Lake of Fire at the end of the great Tribulation. Then Jesus will rule in the Millenium as King.
In between these two events Jesus is the High Priest of the order of Melchizadek who makes our salvation possible.
The first high priest Aaron was washed and anointed with oil by the prophet Moses.
EXODUS 40:12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.
:13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
HEBREWS 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Jesus was washed by the prophet John the Baptist in the river Jordan and anointed by the Holy Ghost as He came out of the water. This began His High Priesthood ministry.
Because David acted out the ministry of Christ as King, thus David was also permitted to carry out a priestly function in-between his anointing as king and being crowned king many years later. After all, David was acting out the ministry of Christ.
By adopting Jesus, Joseph had brought Jesus into the kingly line of David and as such Jesus was known as the Son of David, and thus entitled to the same privileges as David.
I PETER 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
The Spirit of Christ was in each Old Testament prophet, indicating some aspect of the future ministry of Jesus. David was both a king and a prophet as he made certain prophecies.
As another example, Joseph was loved of his father Israel, but hated by his brothers. He was imprisoned with two criminals in Egypt. The baker died and the butler lived.
The Man Jesus was loved by God the Father but hated by His brethern the Jews. He was imprisoned on a cross with two criminals, of whom one died and went to hell, while the other went to paradise.
LUKE 6:5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Now Jesus makes a huge claim. Not only did each prophet indicate some aspect of the life of Christ but even the sabbath day, so holy to the Jews, was just some manifestation of the ministry of Christ.
Sabbath means rest.
GENESIS 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
God blessed the seventh day because God rested, not because it was the seventh day.
The emphasis was not on the seventh day (Saturday) but on the rest.
But resting one day a week from their hard work and money-making was not what God really had in mind because that was not making the Jews into better people.
The sabbath rest was meant to be a rest or ceasing from sin and unbelief.
HEBREWS 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
HEBREWS 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
It is no good working six days and then resting, and then going back to work again.
That is not what God did. He worked and completed His creation and then rested, and never went back to His creative works again because they were complete.
Six speaks of sin. 666 is the man of sin. Working six days symbolizes our sinful works. Peter had the antidote to sin.
ACTS 2: 38 Repent and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
The Blood of Jesus cleanses us from sin. Then the Holy Ghost, the Life that is in His Blood, comes into our hearts to control us and take away all the desire to sin. The Holy Ghost baptism puts Jesus in control of our lives and then we cease from the sinful works that we used to do.
Thus the sabbath day of the Jews (which did not make them better people) was just a shadow of the Holy Ghost baptism which does make us better people, because Jesus then becomes Lord of our lives, and lives inside us so that He can get us to do what He wants done in the New Testament.
HEBREWS 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come,
Just like He lived out His future ministry on earth in the lives of His Old Testament prophets.
Thus the sabbath day was going to change from being a day of the week, and become the Holy Ghost baptism whereby God would inspire the Gentile church to follow His salvation plan throughout the changing circumstances of the seven church ages.
When we of our own free will, offer up our free-will to Him as the only personal sacrifice that we can make, and ask Him to take over and guide our lives according to God’s will, then He is truly Lord of the sabbath, which is our rest from sin and unbelief.
Now the scribes and Pharisees tried to catch Him out again. They would accuse him Him of doing work on the sabbath day even if He healed the sick.
The Jews had missed the point. Doing no work on Saturday was symbolic of man not doing his own works of sin. The Jews in the Old Testament could not get rid of the desire to sin. The only way to get rid of the desire to sin is to have Jesus living inside our human hearts and controlling us, which we call the Holy Ghost baptism. Then we do no works of our own, since all our works are controlled by Him. Only then can we fit into God’s secret salvation plan as He directs and guides our daily lives. This could only happen in the New Testament dispensation that belonged to the Gentiles during the seven church ages.
LUKE 6:6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
:7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
:8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.
:9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
:10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
This made the Pharisees mad. Jesus had completely out-performed them. They could not match his power. He made them look second rate, and their wounded pride wanted some revenge. Yet Jesus had actually not done anything. He had just spoken some words.
What also made the Pharisees mad is that this is exactly what their own priests did every sabbath when they conducted the religious services. The priests had to do much speaking. But God permitted the priests to do this. And Jesus had done no more than what the priests had done.
In addition the priests did work on the sabbath day when they made fires and killed animals as they offered up the sacrifices and burnt the incense. They had to wave the wave offerings horizontally and lift up the heave offerings vertically which symbolized the cross. They had to cut up the meat of the animals, and then remove them from the altars and keep the place clean. So the priests worked hard on a sabbath day.
Legally, the Pharisees were at a complete loss by condoning all this hard work of the priests and then complaining about the words that Jesus spoke.
LUKE 6:11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
But the real issue is that the Pharisees had formed a denomination that was obedient to the commandments of man. They did not actually want the true Word of God because that was very different to what they were used to. They would only accept something that agreed with what they already believed. They could not change. They had no desire to accept something that was better than what they already had.
So instead of learning from Jesus, Who knew more than what they did, they preferred to destroy Him as He had exposed them as very inferior to Himself. They did not enjoy that dent to their pride.
Inertia means we just carry on doing what we are used to doing. We do not want to change.
That is the biggest mistake in our human religious systems. Today we want church tradition, not the Bible. That is why we believe that the wise men went into a stable when they actually went into a house.
But we love the tradition of giving presents more than we love what is written in the Word of God.
LUKE 6:12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Jesus now had to put a team together. Human leadership was so critical that He spent the night in prayer. This was one of the hardest things that He ever did judging from the length of His prayer, which indicates the huge responsibility of church leadership. Who can God use that will not elevate himself due to any successes that God allows him to achieve? Who can God trust to guide others into the perfect will of God, when our biggest weakness is that we do not realize that God does things differently to the way that we would. As humans we start relying on ourselves and our own talents as well as bowing down to the will of the people, as Aaron did when he built the golden calves because that made him popular. Human self-will and self-sufficiency is the ancient enemy of God. The only good human self-will is a dead self-will.
And the only way that we will find God’s will is by prayer and obedience to His Word.
But the answers we get from God will be very different to what we expected. We must not pray to achieve our own self-will as that has no long term benefits. We are supposed to die to self. Today people are driven by taking “selfies”, and being selfish, and self-centred. That is not a good space to be in.
LUKE 6:13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Our biggest problem today is to know who Jesus has chosen.
The early church would never have chosen Saul the great persecutor of the church, as the replacement for Judas. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, the apostles chose Matthias to take the place of Judas, but the Bible never mentions Matthias again. God chose Saul, renamed him Paul and he became arguably the greatest Christian of the seven church ages because he laid down 29% of the New Testament, which is more than anyone else. More importantly, all the great Christians of the later ages had to agree with Paul if they were to claim that their doctrines were correct.
So right from the start, when the top Christians, the disciples, chose a human church leader they got it wrong.
Why? God thinks differently to what we humans do.
So the biggest problem with the spiritual leadership of the church is the fact that humans, who do not know God’s perfect will, insist on choosing human leaders. The Roman Catholic church excommunicated Martin Luther, their greatest monk. They would never have chosen him as their leader.
We simply do not seem to be able to leave the leadership issue to God. We are desperate to maintain our humanly organized churches. That is why the church fails, and eventually in Laodicea, the last church age, the real Head of the church who is Jesus, actually stands outside the church. We can only imagine what he thinks of the human leaders who are inside the church, claiming to be the head of the church. The very leaders who have rejected Him, the Word of God.
LUKE 6:14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
:15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
:16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.
Here is a warning to us all. Where was the greatest traitor that ever disgraced the history of the church? Right there amongst the leaders of the church.
What was his biggest downfall? Money.
Rich church leaders. This has long been a problematic issue in church circles. In one way it seems great, that God is rewarding these people for their faithful service. But there is such a widespread range of beliefs in the churches that how do we determine who are the faithful leaders. All the different varieties seem to prosper. But then other religions have wealthy leaders too. And there are many wealthy atheists. So being rich is not proof of being faithful to God.
How many pastors live in the most luxurious houses? How many church leaders drive modern fancy cars? Have huge bank accounts? Share this “family business” with their wives or their sons or brothers or their relatives as co-preachers and helpers? It is important for them to keep the money in the family. “Church” has become big business.
So things have not changed over 2 000 years. The only times that Jesus got very cross was with the money changers in the Temple. These guys were making big money out of religion. Look how many big and wealthy churches there are today, just before everything gets destroyed in the great Tribulation.
LUKE 6:17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
:18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
:19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
Jesus, as a Man, was happy to deliver people from sickness, demon possession, and all sorts of ailments.
These were all necessary, but nevertheless short term health benefits. Being healed is a huge benefit, but being healthy will not get us into Heaven.
Then Jesus began to focus on something far more important. Teaching the truth. This is more essential as it involves the long term benefits of God’s salvation plan and Eternal life.
What Jesus has to say next is very different to the way that we humans look at things.
When the Man Jesus speaks, we humans hear a very different and unexpected view point.
LUKE 6:20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
Christians keep praying and striving to get more money. God says it is better to be poor.
God’s first priority in this sermon is the poor, as He is more interested in the poor than in the rich. Poor people are more dependent on God as they have less money and thus less opportunities for getting out of God’s will. In the short term the poor lose out in terms of worldly things and comforts, but God thinks long term. There will eventually be more poor people in Heaven than rich people, because poverty limited the number of wrong choices that the poor could make.
LUKE 6:21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
There is no record that Jesus laughed. The shortest verse in the Bible says, “Jesus wept”.
This statement tells us that planet Earth is full of hardship, pain, disillusion, and dismay.
Food is a necessary, but short term benefit. It is soon gone and has to be replaced. We are sorry for those who have too little food, but Jesus says that they are blessed. But that is not how we see it. So we need to change our viewpoint. Suffering in this life makes us focus more on heavenly issues of faith, rather than on worldly and material issues of self-gain.
We claim to be happy when we laugh, but this is a hollow happiness that is superficial. Laughing easily comes with personal success, but laughing cannot cope with failure and disaster.
But there is true joy. Please remember that the cup that holds our true joy must be carved out by the knife of sorrow. The deeper the sorrow that we have experienced, the greater the joy that we can later experience. Sadness and sorrow develop our characters, as they are more in tune with the desperate needs and sufferings of so many people. Difficulty and defeat are the hammer and anvil that beat the weak parts out of our characters, and strengthen our characters so that we can withstand the random tests of time that life and the Devil throw at us.
LUKE 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
If you stay with the Bible the church world will not want you. If they cannot prove you wrong from Scripture they will blacken your name and make you feel unwanted. They will detest your company and hate you with a passion and then make sure that they will remove you from their church.
LUKE 6:23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
Be happy in this rejection. Being well-spoken of by the churches is not a good sign. The same people who cheered Jesus on Palm Sunday were the people who crucified Him on the following Friday.
Remember this. When you are thrown out of the church, that is the only way that you can find Jesus in the last or seventh church age. Because He also stands outside the church door.
The next three verses condemn the main pillars that support the prosperity gospel. Christians’ obsession with getting rich is what God speaks so scathingly about in the seventh or last church age.
REVELATION 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich,…
Wealth is usually what Christians seek and earnestly pray for.
LUKE 6:24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
The downfall of Judas — Money. Wealth opens the door to privilege and pleasure. This simply boosts selfish vanity. The more we spend, the more we want, and the less we appreciate what we buy.
Wealthy billionaires Alfred Krupp, John D Rockefeller, and Aristotle Onassis lived and breathed money, but ended their days in a nightmare of barren loneliness.
LUKE 6:25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
The downfall of a complacent church comfort zone. I have food and I am happy. What a cheap and selfish mentality. Self indulgence becomes the aim of a pointless life.
LUKE 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Popularity and fame. What a pathetic spectacle as people seek self-worth in the opinions and admiration of other people. An overdose of fame and self indulgence destroyed the great Italian singer Mario Lanza, the glamorous film star Marilyn Monroe, and the famous rock-n-roll singer Elvis Presley, as their fortune and fame only led them into a world of heartache and despair and early death.
An irony of life is that people work hard to be celebrities, and then wear dark glasses to avoid being recognized.
Now Jesus stresses the need for courage and moral strength.
Do not fight back the way that the world fights. Be prepared to lose if you have to lose.
If God is in charge of your life, then everything that happens to you is for a reason. Even the attacks of your enemies is part of God’s plan for your life.
LUKE 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
David fought Goliath’s spear with a sling. Never fight an enemy with his own weapon. Do the opposite because this is unexpected. If he hates you, love him. If he curses you, pray for him. If he hits you, do not hit back. If he steals one item, give him another as well. God awards you no credit for what was stolen from you, but you score points with God because you gave away the second item.
Giving impresses God, not taking.
This is not human sense or logic! You can only do this if God is in you. Only a tough test like this can reveal if God is really in us. A corpse never fights back if kicked around. So if we fight back, we have not died to self.
LUKE 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Be ready to give to people. Then you can thank God that you have something to give.
If people take your stuff then be prepared to lose. You see, they are not really your items anyway. They actually belong to God. God lent them to you for a season, and He is now putting them under new ownership. This is an acid test for being dead to self, when you are not upset about losing material things. We actually own more than we need or can use. Less is more. Trimming down our possessions makes us into a leaner and more efficient user of what we have.
The golden rule is to treat others, good and bad, just the way you want to be treated.
Treating people well who treat you well doesn’t prove anything.
LUKE 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
Treating people well who treat you well is no test
Can you treat people well who treat you badly? That is the correct human way of behaving.
LUKE 6:34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
If we help people so that they can later help us, then we are behaving just like the worldly people.
So that gets us no credit with God because that is what the world does. And the whole motive is purely for personal gain and benefit.
Then follows a very difficult philosophy for us humans to accept :
Love your enemies and be good to them. Lend without hoping to get anything back. Forgive whatever happens to you because God allowed it for some reason. Show mercy to the undeserving.
Disagree but do not judge the person. Whatever they did, God wanted that done. God is using them to help us grow stronger. We need opposition if we are to develop.
Always be generous. It is more blessed to give than to receive.
LUKE 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
LUKE 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
If people are bad to you but you are good to them, then that is not normal human behaviour and it just proves that God is in control of your life. Humans love revenge but God prefers mercy.
LUKE 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
LUKE 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Do not judge people as they may change later in life. We also do not know all the circumstances that led to those bad deeds. Maybe God is just using them to mould us. Maybe we are just at a certain point in the history of God’s Big Plan when those things just have to happen for some reason. So do not condemn the sinner but be ready to forgive. Remember, we are not perfect either and thus also stand in need of forgiveness.
Always be ready to give so that God can use you as a channel through which He can distribute to others.
LUKE 6:39And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?
Do not be too quick to follow human advice. The events of today are too complex for us to plan how to cope.
Thus we must follow what the Bible says. For us in today’s world, the ditch is the great Tribulation that is coming.
LUKE 6:40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
Jesus, the Master, went through much sorrow and suffering and ill-treatment. We are not above Him, so we have no claim to escape what He endured for us.
LUKE 6:41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
:42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
We see our faults reflected back to us in the lives of others. What we do wrong ourselves and hide, we happily expose in others. When I point a finger at you, I have three pointing back at myself.
LUKE 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Accusing, condemning, and judging others is negative fruit while at the same time justifying self. If I am as good as I claim to be, let me not judge others as being corrupt.
LUKE 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
The Irish missionary Columba always stressed the truth that was in the Scripture. It is important to tell people what is right. Speak to them from the Bible and then we can’t be too far wrong. But telling them man-made doctrines and opinions, that is evil.
LUKE 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Every Christian calls Jesus “Lord”. But this is meaningless if they do not obey what He says in the Bible. “Lord” means the “Ultimate Boss” Who is to be obeyed without questioning.
LUKE 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
:48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Build your beliefs on the Bible. Then you will not have to apologize later. A flood of opposition cannot dislodge a single Scripture. However the world’s situation changes, the Bible never has to change. It is a universal Rule that never needs upgrades or modifications.
LUKE 6:49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Many scientists are atheists. They developed the Standard Model of Physics and the Big Bang to explain how the visible universe came into existence without any need for God. It was a brilliant idea until they discovered Dark Energy and Dark Matter which makes up 96% of the universe and is invisible. They have no idea what this Dark stuff is, or how it operates, or where it comes from. So the Standard Model has suddenly become a theory that helps them explain less than 4% of the universe, which is not at all convincing. The Big Bang does not help because they claimed that it made 98% of the visible matter in the visible universe in the first three minutes. But the Big Bang said nothing about the invisible 96% of the universe.
So the clever Big Bang theory has fallen and lies in ruin as some of its top advocates like Alan Guth and Nobel prize winner Steven Weinberg distance themselves from the theory that they once championed.
Top physicists are now frantically searching for different answers but in the last 30 years they have discovered no experimental proof of any new laws of physics. (The Higgs boson discovered in 2013 confirmed a prediction that was made way back in the 1960s.) The foundations of Science are not a fixed rock but rather like shifting sand that changes as new discoveries come to light that demolish their former grand ideas. The scientists are trying a new String Theory but do not really know what it is, nor can they do any experiments to confirm it. So it remains a disconnected set of “maybe’s”.
Science simply cannot explain the universe now that 96% of the universe has disappeared from our sight. The Standard Model never predicted anything like Dark Matter or Dark Energy. So when it comes to explain the origin of the universe, atheistic scientists are not in a good space. They simply have no theory to tell us how it all started. They do not even have a theory to tell us what the universe is.
If you are relying on atheistic scientists for the truth, you are going to be seriously disappointed when you become aware of their vast ignorance, as their clever theories only apply to such a tiny bit of reality.
Chapter 7 is a symbolic chapter in which Luke refers us to clues that show that God was planning to turn to the Gentiles during the seven church ages.
But then Luke also has to stress the point that the Jews would first reject Jesus.
Luke writes about a Roman centurion or officer had great faith. This man was a Gentile. He had authority as an officer and ordered soldiers around simply by speaking. So he said to Jesus that He did not have to come to his house to heal his servant because Jesus had such authority, that He could just speak the word and the demon that caused the sickness would have to leave. This duly happened.
LUKE 7:9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Luke now mentions how Jesus praises this Gentile’s faith as being better than any Jew’s faith.
This is like a look into the future where the faith of God would spread through the Gentile churches.
Jesus then goes to the city of Nain where a burial of a widow’s son was taking place. Jesus is eternal Life, so death could not be in His presence any more than darkness can exist in the presence of a bright light. So the dead man came to life.
The Jews were God the Father’s children so they regarded the pagan Gentiles as being spiritually dead since God was not their Father. So Jesus went to a widow’s dead son, as this boy had no natural father. Jesus raised him from the dead indicating that Jesus would resurrect the spiritually dead pagan Gentiles, who did not have God as their Father, into the realm of eternal life during the seven church ages.
Then John the Baptist sends two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He is the Messiah. The Jews thought that Messiah would chase all the Romans out of Israel, and then Messiah would rule Israel. Jesus was not doing this, and thus He did not seem to be the Jewish deliverer from Rome. Our big mistake is thinking that we know what God is going to do.
But Jesus had bigger plans. He was not interested in saving the Jews from the tyranny of Rome. He wanted to save mankind from sin, and as such He intended to convert the Gentiles all around the world during the 2 000 years of church history.
Jesus then complimented John for being a great prophet.
LUKE 7:26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet
:27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
By baptizing Jesus John the Baptist had
a) washed Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb in the same way that the priests had to wash their sacrifices
b) washed Jesus as the High Priest before He was anointed by the Holy Ghost that came down and settled upon Him. Moses had to wash Aaron and anoint him with oil when he became high priest.
Thus John had prepared the way for Jesus to be the Saviour and the High Priest of the heavenly Tabernacle, which is built from the living stones of born again believers who made up the Christian church during the seven church ages.
LUKE 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
The ordinary Jews and the sinners (publicans) accepted John’s baptism of repentance.
LUKE 7:30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
The Jewish leaders rejected John’s baptism.
The people accept John as a prophet but the Jewish leaders rejected John’s teachings. The problems basically lay with the religious leaders who were not interested in truth, but wanted to retain their power and influence, their fame, and their money.
This is just like what happened at the end of the ministry of Jesus. The ordinary Jews praised Him on Palm Sunday when He rode in on a donkey. But by the next Friday the Jewish leaders had persuaded those same Jews to demand His crucifixion.
The religious leaders caused the downfall of the Jews.
First they rejected the baptism of John. Then later they demanded the crucifixion of Jesus.
Having been rejected by the Jews, Jesus would then have to turn to the Gentiles.
LUKE 7:31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
:32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
Luke tells us how Jesus had foretold that the Jews would reject Him.
Jesus said that when people are determined to reject truth it does not matter whether it is presented to them with cheerful music or in a sad manner. They will reject it anyhow.
LUKE 7:33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
LUKE 7:34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
John was a very strict wilderness man who did not socialize and the Jews rejected him. Jesus was not as strict and did socialize, but the Jews also rejected Him as well.
Luke emphasizes the Jews rejecting both John and Jesus as this opens the door to Jesus turning the disciples to the Gentiles when they established the New Testament church during the first church age.
LUKE 7:35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
The Gentiles would accept the wisdom of the Gospel plan which most of the Jews rejected. The Gentiles appreciated the salvation plan of God which had made no sense to the majority of the Jews.
Jesus then went to eat in a Pharisee’s house and a sinner woman washed His feet and anointed them with ointment. Just like the baptism of Jesus, where He was washed as the Sacrifice and both washed and anointed as High Priest of the order of Melchizadek for the seven church ages.
Peter on the day of Pentecost said the same.
ACTS 2: 38 Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Washed in the waters of baptism, anointed by the Holy Spirit.
That is how we get saved from hell.
LUKE 7:37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
:38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
Why was this done by a woman? Why did she only wash and anoint His feet?
A woman represents a church. Paul wants the church as a pure virgin to be engaged (espoused) to Jesus as her husband.
II CORINTHIANS 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
So Luke is using her as an excuse to zoom into the future church ages of the Gentile church. Nebuchadnezzar saw a vision of a Gentile image. The head was Babylon, the arms were the Medes and Persians. The belly and thighs were Greece. The legs represented the Roman empire. The feet then represented the 2 000 years of church history that end with the Coming of the Lord as a stone that demolished the whole image.
So the feet represent the seven church ages where the Gentiles are washed in the water of the Word and the church is anointed by the Holy Ghost.
EPHESIANS 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
The tears speak of repentance as the Gentiles repent of their sins. A woman’s long hair speaks of her submission to her husband. Using her long hair implied that the repentant church would be in subjection to the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, Who is the Word.
Christian women today cut their hair short so they would not be able to do what Jesus complimented this woman for doing. And she was a sinner! Have our standards dropped? Does a modern day woman with short hair symbolize a church that is no longer submissive to the Bible?
LUKE 7:39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
The self righteous Jews had no time for sinners, much less Gentile sinners.
LUKE 7:40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
:41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
:42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
:43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
The Jews were closer to God than the pagan Gentiles. Thus the Jews were more righteous than the Gentiles. So God had less to forgive a Jew for, because they were doing a lot right.
But the Gentiles were far from God and did far more wrong than the Jews. So God had far more to forgive the Gentiles for.
So during the church ages the Gentiles would have far more love for God than the Jews had. Thus the Gentile church would become the Bride of Christ because, having been forgiven for all their paganism, the Gentiles would love God more.
LUKE 7:44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
The law-abiding Jew did not treat Jesus well. The sinful woman (church) did. So this is an obvious clue that Jesus would turn to sinners (the Gentiles) to form His New Testament church.
When a man looks for a bride, he looks for the person who will love him the most.
LUKE 7:45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
The sinner woman (sinful Gentiles who would form the church) was deeply attached to Jesus. She was forgiven a lot and deeply loved him.
Being at the feet of Jesus symbolizes both humility and obedience to Him. These are the attributes of the Gentile church of the New Testament.
LUKE 7:46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
The Jew who was far more righteous than the sinner woman was reasonably indifferent towards Jesus.
Jesus came very simply and humbly. The Jews were not too impressed. They wanted a material kingdom of Israel with the Romans kicked out. God’s plan of dying at Calvary to save all of mankind was not an idea that they really liked.
The Jew did not even regard the head of Jesus. The sinner woman humbled herself at His feet.
LUKE 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
The Jews lived a better and cleaner life, and had fewer sins to be forgiven. So they did not love God that much. They preferred the short term political kingdom of Israel to the long term kingdom of God, which is the Holy Ghost baptism.
LUKE 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
God’s Holy Spirit inside us makes each of us a living stone in His spiritual kingdom.
LUKE 7:48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
The woman represented the church. The Gentile church, holding onto Jesus, the Word, and in tears of repentance, would be forgiven of her sins.
LUKE 7:49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
The Jews could not accept that Jesus could forgive sins. But when Jesus turned to the Gentiles and offered them salvation in the first church age, they were keen to accept.
LUKE 7:50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Jesus sees this woman as a symbol of the future Gentile church. We are saved by grace through faith.
The Holy Ghost baptism is our inner rest from sin. Only then do we find peace and comfort with God.
EPHESIANS 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
JOHN 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Jesus preached the parable of the sower to a large crowd that had gathered out of every city.
LUKE 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
LUKE 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
The Bible is a seed that is planted in the hearts of people and then grows.
The Devil takes away any interest people have in the Bible. Science does that with the Big Bang theory and evolution. They claim the Bible is just a story for primitive people, and not the truth. People, wanting to be regarded as clever, believe all this error and lose out with God. So much for a brief moment of feeling that one is clever. Followed by a lost eternity of knowing that you were fooled.
LUKE 8:6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
A plant in shallow soil has no roots. People with no depth of Bible knowledge cannot withstand temptation and fall away. Basic problem: Too lazy or preoccupied to study the Bible.
LUKE 8:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
People are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
Basic problem: Focus on self and short term gains of this life. No long term vision.
LUKE 8:8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold.
And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
People in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
This is the advice given to every church age throughout the 2 000 years of Gentile church history. Whatever the different circumstances of history were, listening to the Bible is the key to eternal life.
REVELATION 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches;
LUKE 8:9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
Jesus preached this parable to many people but only the disciples asked what it meant.
LUKE 8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
The Bible is written in a certain way so that only those who are very curious and seek hard for an answer will understand it. Those who feel that there are mistakes in the Bible, or else that parts of the Bible are not important, will never penetrate behind the veil of mystery that hides the truth from the casual on-looker.
LUKE 8:16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
The Bible is a light and all the light is good and valuable. Do not try to hide any of the Bible light. Do not be happy with your ignorance of Bible passages. Never say there are mistakes in the Bible. There are no unimportant parts. If a Bible verse contradicts what you believe, then you are wrong. If you cannot explain a Bible verse, do not cover up your ignorance. Ask around. Remember, truth is not just confined to your church group. Others can also teach you.
LUKE 8:18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
Believe, and study and discuss the Bible, and God will reveal more of it to you. Chop out bits as “wrong” or “unimportant” and soon you will lose the bit of understanding that you had.
LUKE 8:21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
Hearing and doing what is in the Bible is the only way of drawing us into a close relationship with Jesus.
Now comes a typical human scenario. While sailing peacefully through life, the disciples ignore Jesus as they do not need Him, so He falls asleep. But as soon as things get rough, then they suddenly seek Him.
LUKE 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
:23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
:24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
:25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Lesson: We pray for good times, but they don’t do us much good as we drift away from Jesus when all is going well for us. We do our best to avoid bad times, yet when things go wrong we serve Him best.
In success we sow the seeds of failure by not needing Jesus. In failure we sow the seeds of success by realizing our dependence on Him.
In the country of the Gadarenes was a naked man, possessed by many demons. He dwelt in the tombs, the places of the dead. The demons asked to be able to go into some nearby pigs. Satan was in the serpent in Eden. Now his demons wanted to live in pigs. Devils are happy to live in animals, but God only wants to live in human hearts.
LUKE 8:32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
:33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
The pigs were demon possessed and then preferred to drown themselves.
LUKE 8:34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
God performed a miracle. But it cost them money as they lost their pigs. Because they lost money they fled. People just cannot bear to lose money, even when God is controlling events. They would rather flee from the presence of Jesus. Such is our human love for money. For most, our love of money is greater than our love for God.
LUKE 8:35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
The demons had stripped him naked. Free from demonology his first instinct was to put on clothes again. So who strips the clothing off modern day women? It also implies that naked people are not in their right mind.
LUKE 8:37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
Because they lost money when their pigs drowned, the Jews wanted nothing to do with Jesus. They wanted a religion that had no sacrifice.
LUKE 8:38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
:39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
Normally Jesus told people to keep quiet about His miracles. That helped to prevent great crowds from getting in His way as He tried to move around. Jesus did not need anyone else to announce His abilities. His own Presence was His best advertisement. His miracles had always been free, which attracted too many people who wanted to use Him for the selfish benefits of a miracle, but who had no real interest in the truth.
The prosperity Gospel encourages people to selfishly use God to boost their wealth, but they are not really interested in Bible truths.
But because the whole multitude told Him to go away, he left this healed man as His evangelist to spread the news around about what the people were missing by chasing Him away.
In addition, this miracle had cost the people money. So following Jesus was not always just for free. It could involve sacrifice. So only those who were prepared to pay a price for the Gospel, rather than just gain from it, would welcome Him back. These were a better quality of follower.
LUKE 8:40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
Luke as a doctor mentions a hopeless medical case, where a woman had bankrupted herself trying in vain to get help from doctors.
LUKE 8:43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
:44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
Just touching His garment even when He did not see her was enough to heal her.
This woman symbolizes the church that draws spiritual power by being in contact with Jesus Christ.
If we get behind Jesus and follow Him, He will help us like he helped this woman.
Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue and he begged Jesus to come and heal his daughter.
Then they got news that she had died.
LUKE 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
:51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
:52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
:53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
Their weeping was just a hypocritical show as any genuine mourner would not mock anyone.
LUKE 8:54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
:55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
:56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
This resurrection from the dead was amazing, yet Jesus never sought to advertise His miracles. Humans are keen to seek fame and advertise their successes.
This resurrection of a young girl was not really going to have significance for Israel. It symbolized the resurrection of the young Gentile church from the dead doctrines of paganism during the first church age. That church would be fed strong meat which represents the true doctrines of the New Testament.
But the Jews did not believe that God would turn to the Gentiles.
Thus Jesus did not want this news spread amongst the Jews as they would not appreciate its significance, especially as the Jews would reject Jesus.
LUKE 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
:3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
The disciples were poor and had to live by faith.
LUKE 9:4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
:5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
:6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
King Herod had killed John the Baptist and now got worried. Even the bad guys get worried when Jesus steps in on the scene.
LUKE 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
:9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
By killing John the Baptist, who was filled with the Holy Ghost, Herod had effectively blasphemed the Holy Spirit which is the unpardonable sin.
Thus Jesus, the Word, never spoke to Herod.
Jesus now decided to feed the 5 000 men in the wilderness.
LUKE 9:13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
:14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
:15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
:16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
This miracle refers to the future seven church ages of the Gentile church.
Jesus gave the food to the disciples. The disciples gave the food to the different groups of people. This represented the 2 000 years of church history when Jesus would inspire the disciples to write the New Testament, and those doctrinal teachings would be spread to whatever groups of people assembled as believers in the various places and in the different church ages. All Christians have learned Bible truth from what the disciples wrote at the start of the church ages. The New Testament is the foundation of Christianity. We can only learn about God from what is written in the Bible.
The original seven items of food also symbolize the seven church ages. The fish that swim underwater is a symbol of the underground church during the severe Dark Ages persecutions of the third and the fourth church ages. The bread symbolizes Bible doctrine that was the basis of the other five church ages.
LUKE 9:17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
The feeding of the 5 000 represented the disciple’s doctrine that would feed all the different groups of Christians throughout the 2 000 years of church history. At the end, the dead Christians would resurrect, and then the Christians would go to Heaven with the Lord Jesus at His Coming. Then the Gospel would go back to the twelve tribes of Israel in the great Tribulation. Moses and Elijah will feed them on the same fragments of doctrine that form the New Testament. The Jews will end up believing the same as what the Gentile church believes. They will eat the same spiritual food that the church believed and fed their souls on.
LUKE 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
:19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
When asked what other people thought, they all answered. People love to quote what other people say. They are scared to believe something for themselves. We humans prefer to be parrots and just repeat something that we heard.
LUKE 9:20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
When asked what they themselves thought, Peter was the only one who actually had a personal revelation of who Jesus was. He was the only one who answered.
LUKE 9:21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
Jesus told them to keep quiet. The Jews were on their way out of God’s truth. The disciples were going to start the Christian church. So there was no need to be telling the Jews what they would be unable to believe.
LUKE 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
Far from believing that Jesus was God in the flesh, the Jews were actually going to kill Him.
Please notice that it was the religious leaders who rejected Christ. Then they persuaded the people.
The leadership is where the Jews and the church would go wrong.
LUKE 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Christians must die to self. Self must be dead. The cross represents suffering. Then Christians must follow no human leader, only Jesus, Who is the Word. We must never believe anything unless we see it written in God’s Bible.
LUKE 9:24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
God has a Big Picture, which is a spiritual river of God’s will running through the affairs of men. We each have our small pool of selfish self-will. If we preserve self by splashing around in our small personal puddle in order to suit ourselves, then we die spiritually. If we surrender our self-will and die to self, then only can we be pushed into God’s river which will sweep us off in an unknown direction that we do not want to go in. But this river is the only path to safety. If we are not dead to self we will spend our time struggling to get out of the river.
LUKE 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
Women. Money. Fame. Whatever we gain on this world is temporary. We cannot take it with us. Being the richest man in the graveyard is a poor consolation.
LUKE 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.
We must stand up for the Word of God. Churches have gone off into traditions, man-made doctrines and other errors. We have to keep staying with what is written, which means having to disagree with your favourite church, your nice church leaders, and your family. That is not an easy path to follow. It all depends on who comes first in your life.
The mount of transfiguration experience represents the end of the seventh church age. The Coming of the Lord has two events that precede it. The dead in Christ shall rise first. These are all the saints from the seven church ages. Then the living believers will be changed into new bodies. Then all will be caught up into the air to meet the Lord Jesus, and go with Him to the wedding supper in Heaven.
Then two prophets, Moses and Elijah, will take the Gospel to the Jews in the great Tribulation.
LUKE 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
Three disciples would see the Second Coming of Jesus acted out on Mount Transfiguration.
LUKE 9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
Seven days passed. Symbolizing the seven church ages that would be complete. The eighth day (8 represents a new system) would represent the start of the great Tribulation. The word “about” is a little fuzzy as there is a changeover time from when the church ages end and when the Tribulation starts.
LUKE 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
A supernatural change occurs. This represents the dead saints rising in immortal bodies and the living church being changed into immortal bodies.
Jesus shines with a radiant glory that no mortal man can compare with. This is to illustrate that He is so far superior to any man, that no human can possibly be compared to Him.
LUKE 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
Jesus had a radiance that totally outshone these two great prophets, who were just men. Jesus is far more than a Man. The supernatural God Who was in Him was shining out to transform Him.
Moses symbolizes the resurrection of the dead saints from the seven church ages, because he died.
Elijah never died, and thus symbolizes the living church at the end that will have their bodies changed.
But the spirit of Elijah was also promised to return at the end of the Gentile church ages to restore all things back to the apostolic beliefs of the first church age as laid out in the New Testament.
MATTHEW 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
John the Baptist had come in the spirit of Elijah. But John was now dead. So this is a future prophecy.
Thus at the end there will be an Elijah-like ministry to turn the end-time believers back to the doctrines of the New Testament church that were lost during the Dark Ages. This restoration will prepare believers for the catching away of the church to meet the Lord in the air.
LUKE 9:31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Moses and Elijah appeared in glory but it was to discuss His death. (Our greatest glory as Christians is when we can die to ourselves). Calvary is the key event of His First Coming, as that achieved salvation for both Jew and Gentile and thus prepared the way for His glorious Second Coming.
After the church is caught up to heaven, then Moses and Elijah will take the Gospel back to the Jews during the great Tribulation. The 1440 000 will receive Jesus as Messiah, and then die.
So the end time events at the Coming of the Lord are brilliantly summarized by this Mount of Transfiguration experience.
LUKE 9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
The parable of the ten virgins: They were clean women — saved Christian churches. But they were all fast asleep just before the wedding. A cry woke them up — the Elijah who came to restore the church back to the faith of the New Testament apostolic fathers.
Then as the church gets caught up to Heaven, these two prophets (Moses and Elijah) take the Gospel back to the twelve tribes of Israel during the Tribulation, to prepare them for the Coming of Jesus to the 144 000 Jews.
LUKE 9:33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
A trinity spirit gets hold of Peter. A huge human weakness is our desire to elevate famous men that God has used. Notice the massive error. Peter is putting two great humans on the same level as Jesus.
A church spirit also got hold of Peter. He wants to make a tabernacle or church in the name of a famous man of God. A Lutheran church or tabernacle. A Wesleyan church or tabernacle. This is the spirit of denomination which has eventually divided Christianity into 30 000 different kinds of denominational and non-denominational church groups.
Many Message believers place the quotes of William Branham as equal to Scripture. Some even claim the quotes to be above Scripture.
You do not have a revelation from these quotes unless you can prove your belief from Bible verses only.
Peter’s biggest mistake was offering advice to Jesus. We must just believe the Bible and never try to improve on it. God does not need our suggestions or advice.
LUKE 9:34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
A cloud obliterated the scene to symbolize the complete obliteration of Peter’s suggestion. The three disciples got scared which is the correct attitude in the presence of God. In an atmosphere of fear we are more inclined to listen and less inclined to speak.
A cloud that comes down on a mountain is experienced as a thick mist in which one loses direction and gets hopelessly lost. This is what happens to us Christians when we try to compare some man to Jesus. Saying that Moses or Elijah or William Branham can be compared to Jesus is just indicating that we are lost in the mists of unbelief.
LUKE 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
Any voice that speaks to us at the end-time will only reveal what is written in the Bible. Which is Jesus in Word form. Only hear Him, the Word of God. No other man.
In the “days of the voice of the seventh angel” we must take all of his quotes back to Scripture, and only believe the ideas that can be proven by joining Bible verses together to reveal the truth.
The quotes of a man, where he has got it right, can only point to the truth. The truth itself is only found in the Bible. Line upon line. Scripture backed up by more Scriptures, with no contradictions.
ISAIAH 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
No error can run through the Bible without contradicting Scripture somewhere. The biggest deception of our age has been Message preachers using quotes to establish their beliefs. Why do they not prove their ideas from the Bible? Because their ideas are wrong, and thus cannot be found in the Bible. They are so in love with their own ideas, and the boost to their egos because they are regarded as clever, that they happily disregard the Bible.
For instance many “Message” preachers will tell you that they know the new name of Jesus. Different preachers have invented many different “new names”, so it depends on who you are talking to.
REVELATION 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
The Bible says that no man knows the new name of Jesus.
Thus “Message” preachers claim to know what the Bible says we cannot know.
Our ultimate. Only listen to the Bible, the Word of God. The Bible is our Absolute.
Moses and Elijah, two of the greatest prophets, cannot even begin to be compared with Christ.
Those “Message” preachers who claim that William Branham’s quotes can be equated with Scripture are deceiving the people and perverting what he taught.
Any man’s revelation must be tracked down through the relevant Bible verses that alone will establish it as being correct.
The top three disciples, left to themselves were just as clueless as we are. Human opinion means nothing. There are no famous people in the presence of Jesus.
In our digital age there are only two numbers: 1 and 0. In terms of this digital information age, Jesus is number One and every other human being is a zero.
Which number are you?
LUKE 9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
A voice spoke. The mist departed. Only Jesus was seen. There is no-one to compare with Jesus. He alone saves us. If you have heard the voice of the seventh angel, then you will see Jesus alone as your Absolute, walking through the pages of the Bible as you link Scripture verses together to see a clearer revelation of Jesus Christ.
The top three disciples had been reduced to silence. Their personal contributions were just an open door to huge error. They were learning a vital lesson that they must only reflect what Jesus said, not their own opinions. Only then would they be fit to write the New Testament.
So the church has only one Leader: Jesus. One creed: Christ. One Book: the Bible.
Never forget that in your admiration of some famous person. Take your eyes off the Bible and like Peter, you will sink in the waters of the very deceptive spiritual waves of religious deceit that sweep over the world today.
The pit of hell has opened in our day, and spews out smoke which represents the deceiving spirits of all seven church ages combining to fool the end-time Bride. These subtle, charming, and persuasive spirits have many clever doctrines (there are many varieties of the so-called end-time “Message”) but they all share one common plan of attack. They make you take your eyes off the Bible. You end up unable to prove what you believe by just using the Scriptures. That is why we need the shield of faith. Faith only comes by hearing the Word.
William Branham was not promised as the “Voice of God”. That is an unscriptural title for his ministry. He was promised as the “voice of the seventh angel”. His book publishers thus add to the confusion.
This Transfiguration scene refers to the end of the church ages so there was no need to tell it to any Jews of that day as it would be meaningless to them.
A man brought his demon possessed dumb son to Jesus.
LUKE 9:40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
:41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
:43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
Jesus had just demonstrated huge power. Then He warned the disciples that He would be killed. This was not because He lacked power, but because that was an essential part of God’s hidden salvation plan.
So when things go wrong we must realize that God is doing something different to what we would do.
Then if we got into God’s thinking, we would realize that nothing had gone wrong. God wanted it to work out like that.
God has huge power which He sometimes hides behind a show of human weakness. But do not be fooled. He knows exactly what He is doing. That way He keeps the Devil guessing.
LUKE 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
The disciples could see Jesus in His amazing power. But they had no clue that on Calvary Jesus would hide His power behind a veil of tortured human flesh and a display of apparent human weakness.
The disciples were totally incapable of seeing God’s hidden plan unfold.
Messiah underwent a final series of events that totally baffled everyone. None of the people knew what was going on at Calvary. So we are warned that at the Second Coming of Jesus, things are going to be totally different to anything that we humans are expecting.
Humans are thus not competent to lead the church, because we humans simply do not know what God’s hidden will is.
All we can do is stay with the Bible, and not do or believe anything that is different to the Bible.
The Bible alone can illuminate the next steps we will have to take.
Luke speaks of another great error that afflicts us humans.
LUKE 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
This is one of the greatest curses in the Christian church. The desire to elevate a man. Worse still, the desire to elevate self. Competitive Christianity feeds the ego and stresses self-importance as Christians say, “I am greater or better than you”, which is the deadly seed of self-adoration. This really appeals to the self-obsessed. Christians, who feel superior, want to teach others to be like themselves, and thus make converts in their own image. They want to make clones of themselves.
LUKE 9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
:48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
Jesus replies to the question “Who is the greatest?” by holding up a child. But a child is not the greatest. So the church will not be built on “the greatest”. There is no such position in the church. No child would claim to be the greatest, because children are very curious and ask lots of questions, simply because they realize that they know so little and they are anxious to learn. So Jesus is offering us this example. He basically is telling us that we actually know very little of what the Bible is saying. We should be more anxious to learn than to teach. In our bodies we have two eyes and two ears, but only one mouth, showing that we need to learn more than we need to teach.
So we are not nearly as clever as what we think. An attitude of spiritual superiority is not a Christian virtue.
The least Christian is great in God’s eyes. We are unlikely to uplift the least Christian, and that implies that there is no uplifted or greatest human leader. Christ alone is the Head of the church. We must only hear Him as He speaks through His Word. God sees a humble obedience to His Word as greatness.
While these disciples were desperately competing with each other for greatness, they had no idea that one of their mortal enemies, a Pharisee named Saul, would overshadow all of them in terms of setting up the foundation of the Christian church. Saul was later going to have his name changed to Paul.
Once again, by thinking about themselves, the disciples got completely onto the wrong path.
Luke hits out against the spirit of denominationalism — “My church is the right church.”
There is not one church group which alone can claim to be correct.
LUKE 9:49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
:50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
The supernatural will be manifest in many different churches, despite their differences in doctrine. No one group has the monopoly on the supernatural.
ROMANS 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
God is not limited by the walls that churches build around themselves in order to be “the best church” or the “only church with the real truth”.
We need to respect God’s gifts and talents wherever we see them in operation.
Each Christian needs to grasp that God moves outside the cozy consensus of his or her specific church group.
Luke does not want us to condemn our opponents to destruction.
The Samaritans did not receive Him in a certain village.
LUKE 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
Things have not changed over 2 000 years. Christians still get angry when people disagree with them. Christians still hope that God will destroy their opponents. We are free to disagree about doctrine, but should never wish for anyone’s destruction, however wrong they might be. If we think that way then we have a very wrong spirit.
The Archbishop of Canterbury recently prayed that Richard Dawkins, an atheist and outspoken critic of the church, would be healed from ill-health. Atheists were so stunned by the Archbishop’s consideration for a fellow human being that many questioned if he actually meant this prayer. He did. He was just setting a good example to the rest of us. Disagree with someone by all means, but show him every respect and consideration as a fellow man. Well done to the Archbishop for showing us how to handle this situation. And well done to Richard Dawkins for recovering his health. Every human being has a right to be healthy.
As a church we need critics to point out our faults. Only then can we improve. And judging from the mess that the world is in, all of our churches need a lot of improving. So thank God for the critics. They keep us on our toes which is much better than all of us being complacently asleep in our man-made beliefs.
Luke emphasizes that for us humans, following Jesus is not easy. Being a Christian is no bed of roses.
LUKE 9:57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
:59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
:61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
We have to focus on the Gospel first. There may be no convenient place for us to sleep. Even emotional involvement with family funerals or family farewells cannot take away our priority for obeying God first.
God’s will sweeps us off into directions that we would not personally have chosen to go.
When we accept Jesus as our Head, we have no further say in where the path leads. The body can only obey the head, it cannot tell the head what it wants to do.
Jesus added 70 more people to His team. Sending them out two by two.
There is always plenty of work to do. Laziness is not a Christian virtue.
LUKE 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
:5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
The disciples went out poor. Evangelism did not depend on money. They were not to do social visiting from house to house. They would preach and heal in some cities, and be rejected in other cities.
God would later harshly judge the cities that rejected the truth.
LUKE 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Christians are always impressed with supernatural power.
Jesus reminds them that He kicked Satan out of Heaven at the beginning. Thus He has power over the Devil.
LUKE 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Jesus grants His disciples of His power which is impressive. But our success is to be written in Heaven where it cannot be seen, not on earth amongst the things that we can see.
Remember that Judas also had this power, but it would not do him any good in the end when he chose to chase after money.
LUKE 10:21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
Human cleverness will not reveal the mysteries of Scripture. Long years at University and Bible school will not explain truth. Each denomination has its own training centres that teach different doctrines compared to the other denominations. So which seminary has the real truth? Any of them?
God reveals His truth to the most unlikely people.
We must pray to have our eyes anointed with eye salve. Otherwise we will not see the real truth.
Luke explains two points of human behaviour:
Be ready to help anyone who really needs help, but remember that charitable works are not more important than hearing the Word of God.
Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan who helped a robbed and injured man of a different race and then spent his own money to settle the medical costs.
This was a good neighbour because he regarded only one race — the human race. All barriers of colour, creed, nationality, tribe etc. fade away when humans need help.
In a village were two sisters. One helped the disciples to eat, and the other listened to the Word of God.
Mary sat at Jesus feet and listened to His teachings.
Martha spent her time serving the disciples with food and washing up the plates and dishes. Then she complained that Mary was not helping with this physical work.
To us humans it seems that Martha was the better person, as she was very busy feeding the stomachs of other people. This is an important function. People cannot live if they do not eat.
But they will soon get hungry again. Jesus said it was actually even better to sit still and feed one’s own soul on the Word of God. Then you will have Bible truth which you can impart to another. And Scriptural truth is for eternity. You may lose your food to a robber, but God’s Word in your mind can never be taken away from you.
LUKE 10:41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
:42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke recites this most famous of prayers.
LUKE 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Luke presents Christ as a Man.
Luke stops here just before the end of the Lord’s prayer because this first portion applies to us humans. We want God in Heaven to make sure that what happens on earth lines up with His Heavenly plan. (Not with our personal selfish desires). God must provide food and forgive us (and in return we will hopefully forgive others) and God must please take us away from temptation (whereby we admit that we are very weak and fall easily into temptation). So this amazing prayer stresses our complete dependence upon God.
Luke deals with human issues. The last part of the prayer, that Luke leaves out, applies only to God as He has the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. (God’s plan is for eternity, not for the short term benefits that we usually pray for).
Luke writes about the Man-part of Jesus and how we humans can interact with Him.
How do we humans make our prayers effective?
Jesus said that we must be desperate when we approach God for something.
LUKE 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
God answers prayer in a good way. That means if He does not answer what we asked for, we were asking for the wrong thing which would have done us harm in some way.
We must have complete confidence in His decision on how He answers our prayer.
Luke now deals with the huge human problem whereby we allow wrong spirits to possess us.
Jesus chose a person who was dumb and could not speak.
Jesus cast out the demon from the dumb person and as soon as the person could speak, the people then accused Jesus of being Beelzebub, the prince of devils.
LUKE 11:14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
:18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
If Satan casts out his own demons, then is his kingdom divided against itself and will not stand.
Jesus said that He is stronger than Satan and thus He has power over Satan.
Thus Jesus cannot be the Devil or Beelzebub because He is much more powerful than the Devil.
On the wrong side, demons obey the Devil. Thus to be on the right side, we humans must be subject to and obey Jesus.
If we are not with Him as He fulfills God’s will, then our efforts will be of no use, even though we mean well, as our efforts will just scatter what God is trying to gather.
If a demon is cast out of a person then that person must serve God diligently. If that person allows the demon back in again, then that demon returns with seven other demons.
LUKE 11:24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
When a person comes to the truth in the last church age that there is an end-time prophet who is to restore us back to the Scriptural teachings of the New Testament church, then the denominational spirit leaves him as denominational beliefs cannot stay with Scripture.
For example, you cannot find a Scripture that says that the wise men went into a stable. (It was a house). There is also no Scripture that says they bowed down to a baby. (He was a young child). The Bible never told us to remember His birth. The 25th December is an unscriptural date. Christmas is not a word found in the Bible. A christmas tree has nothing to do with the stable that He was born in. (The word “Santa”, if you move the “n” to the end, spells out “Satan”.) So if a person wants to be Scriptural, they cannot feel comfortable with the denominational devotion to the Christmas season.
LUKE 11:25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
The person, who forsakes denominational man-made traditions, and becomes a Bible believer, is justified and sanctified and learns how to understand and prove the Godhead, water baptism, church ages, original sin etc. by using the Bible verses only.
Then, sadly and inconsistently, Scripture is forsaken under the influence of domineering but nice and plausible pastors. The person starts to learn “all” about what the seven thunders uttered as well as the “new name” of Jesus. They also learn that Jesus came (or appeared) as a huge cloud in 1963 above the desert in Flagstaff, America. This cloud which was 42 kilometers up in the air is taken to be the mighty Angel of Revelation Chapter 10 that came down to stand on land and sea. William Branham was supposed to be under the Cloud when it was photographed, even although the hunting season was not yet open, and as such he was not even there on that day.
His followers scrambled up his quotes, forsook Scripture and indulged in these speculations and mental gymnastics. They also get very cross if you disagree and present Bible verses that contradict their beliefs. But William Branham himself also made many quotes which contradict these ideas.
By the time a person can believe all these interpretations, which cannot be proven by linking Scripture to Scripture, they are actually worse off than what they were in the denominations. William Branham insisted that his ministry was to restore us back to the New Testament church, and all these ideas never appeared in the early church. Nor was any New Testament church dominated by a pastor, however competent, charismatic, and charming he (or she) may be.
LUKE 11:26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
There is a chance that a denominational Christian could learn truth from the teachings of William Branham. But, after coming out of a denomination and learning certain truths from the Bible, a person today tends to get fooled or intimidated into believing that a cleverly spliced-together selection of quotes are the truth. Thus they forsake the Bible for the second time, when they should know better, and follow quotes as proof that “they are in the Message”. (Whatever that means). After accepting that fatal mistake into their spiritual mind-set, they have little chance of finding the Bible truth yet again for our day.
So how did “Message believers” break up into such a variety of conflicting beliefs?
Because there are cunning evil spirits of deception from all the seven church ages that have been unleashed in our last age.
Seven spirits indicate a deceiving spirit from seven different church ages.
If you come out of a denomination to be restored back to the New Testament church, then do not allow the denominational spirit to re-enter you. Denominations do not prove their doctrines by linking Bible verses together in such a way that there are no contradictions.
Pastor-dominated churches and doctrines built on modern-day quotes and interpretation of quotes were never part of the New Testament church.
If you cannot prove your beliefs just from the Bible, then you follow a man-made system that opens the door to the spirits of the error of all seven church ages. These combined spirits are far more crafty and slippery than what you and I can control. Only Jesus, the Word, can keep them out of our lives.
The “Message” groups, like the denominations, no longer follow just Scripture. But the “Message” groups are without excuse. They were originally taught to believe like the early church, which was strictly Scriptural.
Then, worse still, to remain part of the cozy consensus of a “Message” church, individuals will strongly oppose anyone who shows them how to be Scriptural.
By opposing the truth from the Bible you effectively separate yourself from God.
The history of communism revealed that the further the communists got away from the teachings of Lenin, the more they idolized and glorified Lenin.
The same can be said of the “Message” churches. The further they have got away from William Branham’s attempts to restore us back to the New Testament, the more they glorify William Branham and elevate his quotes as equal or superior to Scripture.
Luke now states the family we are born into gives us no advantage.
LUKE 11:27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
A woman said that Mary must be blessed to have such a Son. This implies that the immediate family of Jesus (or a prophet) have a big advantage.
LUKE 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
Jesus said,”No, not at all. There is no spiritual advantage due to birth”.
The truly blessed are those who hear the Bible verses and stay with them. Those who live a Scriptural life, and only preach from Scripture, and who never contradict Scripture.
Jesus said that His resurrection from the dead is the only sign that will be given to the evil world.
This is the most spectacular event that ever occurred. Death is our final enemy. No religious leader had ever beaten death by getting back out of the grave. This event would be unique.
No other religion can compete with this event. If sinners can ignore the resurrection and not be impressed by it, then no other sign will have a lasting effect on them.
LUKE 11:31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
The queen of Sheba probably had to cross the Sahara desert in her desperation to hear God’s wisdom that He had given to Solomon. She certainly tried hard to find truth.
So how much harder should we try to find the truth of God’s Word. Sitting comfortably and being entertained in a church where no-one is allowed to disagree is not the difficult and dangerous path to find truth that Jesus said would exist.
LUKE 11:32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Nineveh was one of the most evil cities of all time. Yet those people repented.
They worshiped the fish god Dagon. A whale swallowed Jonah for three days, then vomited him up onto the sea shore. The pagans were impressed. Jonah had been swallowed up and assumed dead for three days. In awe the pagans watched their fish god, seen for the first and last time ever, swim up to the sea shore and puke. They overlooked the messy vomit and rejoiced that here came a prophet straight from the mouth of their fish god. This was like a resurrection back to life. The pagans had never seen anything like this before. Nor would they see it again. So they listened to him. News of this miracle spread inland to Nineveh so they also listened and repented. This “resurrected” prophet led the greatest revival of the Old Testament where 120 000 vicious pagans repented.
If that was their respectful response to a man who had just been swallowed for three days, then Jesus expects unbelievers to be even more impressed by His ability to rise from a grave, where He had died on Friday and resurrected on Sunday. This was the first and last time ever that a human being had accomplished this.
We need no other sign than this.
If He raised Himself from the dead then He will have no real problem in raising us from the dead.
If we do not believe after His literal resurrection, we are worse than the people of Nineveh who believed after Jonah performed a “shadow” of the resurrection.
Jesus launched an angry condemnation of the religious leaders.
Luke makes a sad point. The religious leaders are nice men. Friendly, helpful and persuasive. But each leader gets his church to believe his version. Now there are 30 000 different denominational versions. So religious leaders are nice guys, but they are no big help if you are looking for truth.
LUKE 11:37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
:38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
Church leaders are well dressed, drive nice cars, and live in fancy houses. They ooze charm and friendliness. Their outward show is brilliant.
But if you examine the denominational doctrines and traditions that they teach, they are not proven from Scripture. Thus Jesus condemns them.
LUKE 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
Jesus then said that religious leaders like the Pharisees put up an outward religious show with beat music and fluent preaching to impress, but inwardly they were greedy and bad. They do not reflect the beliefs of the early church. They would lose their position in the church if they did. Have you ever bitten into a lovely apple and found to your horror that the inside was rotten?
This is what Jesus says about the religious leaders.
LUKE 11:42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
The leaders pay attention to little technical details of tithing, but have no love for Scripture or for proving their beliefs from the Scripture. The people love Christmas, so the preachers defend this unscriptural date and tree to maintain their popularity. They do not dare mention that the wise men who brought three presents to Jesus never went into the stable. They went into a house two years later. But the people love the presents, so the denominational preachers remain popular by putting the wise men into the stable. Truth is not the issue. Keeping the people happy is.
But the Bible is the judge of truth. Not the emotions and greed of the people who want presents.
LUKE 11:43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
Religious leaders love the important seats in the front of the church where they will be noticed and elevated in the minds of the people. Pastors love being recognized in public, and are the only preachers who have to be greeted by their title. You cannot just say “Ray”, you have to say “Pastor Ray”.
Jesus was not impressed.
LUKE 11:44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
Jesus said the religious leaders were dead men walking. They were hidden graves. They were taking their followers to their deaths. If you do not stick strictly to the Bible, like the early church did, then you are heading for the great tribulation even if you are saved. Accepting Jesus as Saviour saves you from hell. Serving God in Spirit and in truth is needed to save us from the Tribulation.
JOHN 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
When God has revealed the truth of His Word, men have no excuse to be ignorant. Unless we love our church traditions and man-made doctrines more than we love the Bible.
They made fancy tombs for their prophets, but they were the ones who had killed the prophets.
The religious leaders did not want to lose their power, influence, and access to the money.
They also did not want the truth.
LUKE 11:54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
The religious leaders wanted Jesus, the Word, dead.
The religious leaders were not in tune with the Word of God.
In some ways the church leaders are like the hijack pilots who piloted the people to their deaths in the Twin Towers of 911. The people sat quietly in their seats and trusted their pilots to land them safely. Then they suddenly died. This was a grim warning to us all. Christians are not supposed to be passengers just depending on a pastor to get them to their destination. Remember the ten virgins who fell asleep.
PHILIPPIANS 2: 12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
We must obey Paul’s teachings. Repentance saves us from hell. What other dangers do we still need to be saved from? We need to be saved from the errors in our churches. The cozy consensus of man-made doctrine and tradition that lulls us into a complacent sleep while our leaders take us into the great Tribulation.
If Christians are not ready for the Second Coming of Jesus, then there will come a sudden death in the great Tribulation.
A big crowd gathered. Jesus then warned them about their religious leaders who were misleading them.
We soon learn that Jesus was very much against the religious leaders.
LUKE 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is a pretence. Preachers claim that they preach from the Bible, but they do not prove their beliefs from Scripture. They vigorously oppose those who are Scriptural. Preachers outwardly profess their love for God. But then they offer man-made doctrines as if their ideas are God’s Word.
MATTHEW 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
When humans make up a belief, it is a complete waste of time. “In vain” means hopeless and destitute of any value.
Man has changed the “voice of the seventh angel” into what has now become the “Voice of God”. Humans endlessly corrupt the truth.
Preachers are dead scared to admit that the wise men went into a house. A life-long church member of 80 years old admitted that she had never heard that the wise men went into a house. Another church member condemned a person to hell for saying that the wise men entered a house. She claimed that God had told her to condemn this person whose great sin was to read the verse from the Bible. When questioned on this topic, a preacher in a jail service loudly said, without opening his Bible, “My Bible says the wise men went into the stable”. When the relevant Scripture was read to him that it was a house, he glared fiercely and walked off without saying a word.
Why do so many different people deny this house visit of the wise men? What are they covering up?
As Shakespeare would say, “Something is rotten in the state of” the church.
LUKE 12:4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
Terrorists and religious extremists can kill us. They are not nice people. Getting killed is awful, but that does not affect the final destination of your soul.
LUKE 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
But religious leaders teach you doctrines that contradict the Bible. There are no Bible verses that say “Trinity”, “One God in three Persons”, “One -in-three”, “Three-in-one”, “Second Person of the Godhead”, “God the Son”, “The pastor is the head of the church”, “The shepherd is the pastor”, “The tithes belong to the pastor”, “Jesus was born on 25 December”, “Celebrate the birth of the Lord”, “The wise men went into the stable to see the Baby Jesus”, “It is okay for women to preach”, “Abortion is fine”, “Same sex marriage is okay”, etc., etc.
And so the list keeps growing of unscriptural statements that are the backbone of modern “churchianity”.
If you die believing that a mass of human error is the truth, then what is the fate of your soul? Why are you so far removed from what Paul and the apostles originally taught? They never made these statements.
Who teaches all this error? Our church leaders. They may not kill you physically because they are nice people who claim to be teaching us what the Bible says. But they put your soul in danger of hell, which is far worse.
God knows everything about us and He can look after us, even if the church world does not want us.
LUKE 12:7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Can we stand up for Scripture in the face of church tradition? Are we brave enough to question our church leaders and risk our popularity.
LUKE 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
When church leaders glare at us and when the church members shun us, do we just fold up and give in to them and their errors?
LUKE 12:9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
When the Holy Ghost reveals Scriptural truth and church members and leaders accuse those Christians of being devils, in order to protect their church traditions, then they cross a line.
LUKE 12:11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
:12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
Truth will always be persecuted and opposed. So be careful, a comfortable church life where you are eager to please and agree with what is preached, is not evidence of believing the truth.
LUKE 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Today we see the evidence of God’s blessing as wealth. This is a fatal misconception. Do not go down that path.
Are you prepared to follow God even when you have to lose?
LUKE 12:16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
So the rich man planned to build bigger barns to store all the food. He was financially secure for many years. Now he could relax and eat, drink, and be merry. But he died that night, making himself a fool.
LUKE 12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Truth is God’s treasure. Believe and follow the truth and you obtain a mansion in Heaven. That is real riches. Be obedient to God’s Word rather than cluttering up your soul with the endless greed of accumulating wealth.
MATTHEW 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
The more money you accumulate, the harder it is for you to get into Heaven.
We must not be concerned with our material needs. That way we worry ourselves into an early grave and do all sorts of things that we know are wrong (like cheating our tax and stealing from work).
LUKE 12:22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
:30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
If, as a Christian, your deepest desire is to survive and make ends meet, then you are no better than the unbelievers because that is also their greatest desire.
LUKE 12:31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Focus first on being Scriptural and obeying God’s Word. This should be our main aim in life. Follow His guidance, however little sense it might make to you, and then leave Him to add to you what He wishes. And do not complain when He removes things from you. He knows what is good for you and you do not know what is best for you.
LUKE 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
“Little flock” — Ultimately there are going to be few Christians left on the true path. So do not be fooled by big crowds and popularity.
Our biggest reward is going to be a mansion in Heaven. We cannot do anything about that except follow and obey God, as He alone will give it to us. So if we have to wait for Him to give us the biggest prize, why cannot we trust Him to give us what we need on this side as well? Why do we so desperately chase the material things that we think we need?
LUKE 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Our human problem is that we are focused on physical things that we can see, not on spiritual things that we cannot see. We treasure what is visible but if we allow God to change our ability to think we will discover that a revelation from the Bible has far more value than anything on planet Earth.
LUKE 12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
II SAMUEL 20:8 …. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; ….
The girdle was a cloth that was wrapped around a person so that he could fasten the sheath of his sword to the girdle.
EPHESIANS 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,
Truth is associated with the life in man’s loins.
From this girdle of truth we fasten the sword of God’s Word, as the Word of God is the only truth that we have.
EPHESIANS 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Our loins are where life comes from.
Eternal Life comes only from the Bible.
PSALM 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
ISAIAH 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
The only light we have is God’s Word, the Bible.
II PETER 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Only the Bible light can guide us. Everything else is darkness.
Our lights are only burning when we quote the Word of God. When we tell people what is written in the Bible.
LUKE 12: 40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
Everything about the Second Coming is going to be very different to what we think it will be.
LUKE 12:42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
“Meat in due season”. Knowing where we are in the plan of God for today. Lining up the teachings of William Branham with Scripture so that we can be restored back to what the New Testament church believes. Realizing that Jesus, the Word, is our Absolute. Staying with the revealed Word that is written. Not speculating about quotes.
LUKE 12:43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
:44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
Proving that what brother Branham preached can be taught from the Scripture alone. That is God’s plan for today. Only believe what the Scripture says.
LUKE 12:45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
:47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
“Message” preachers aggressively domineer people with endless quotes. Churches threaten and excommunicate dissenters who want to be Scriptural. Friendly pastors smile politely, but rule dictatorially. No pastor ruled a church in the New Testament. Man-made doctrines and church traditions rule the people today. Obey or else.
“Message” preachers who live off quotes and interpretations of quotes when they know that we should be restored back to Scripture are going to get hit hard. Church leaders who rejected the call to be restored back to the New Testament will also come short in the Tribulation.
LUKE 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Those denominational preachers who do not know much will get punished less. But if God has opened our eyes, then He expects a lot from us. God wants us restored to the early church that never preached on the Seven Thunders, nor the new name of Jesus, and never claimed that the Lord had come as a huge cloud. Nor did they believe that the Angel of Revelation Chapter 10 had come down as a huge cloud (that just happened to stay 42 kilometers up in the sky). The early church met in houses and never had a pastor as the leader of the church. There is no record of tithes being paid to a pastor in the New Testament.
New church ideas keep mutating. So it is difficult to keep up with them all.
Going back to the New Testament is much easier as those standards remain fixed.
So “Message” preachers will face a much harsher punishment in the great Tribulation. They knew better but then rejected being Scriptural because people wanted quotes and interpretation of quotes. Message people wanted human leadership. Like Aaron at Mount Sinai, the pastor gave the people a polluted golden calf of error. It made the preachers rich but Message believers are far away from believing what the New Testament Christians believed.
LUKE 12:50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
Baptism is a symbol of death. Jesus was faithful unto death. Do we have that kind of courage?
LUKE 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
Bible truth will cause splits in the families. Have we even got the courage to oppose family members?
LUKE 12:53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
LUKE 12:54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
In 1963 a great cloud at an extreme height of 42 kilometers, where there is no moisture to form a cloud, moved across America from the west coast of California to Flagstaff in Arizona and then to New Mexico.
About a week later seven angels came to William Branham and commissioned him to preach on the revelation of the opening of the seven seals. These revelations enabled him to understand many of the deep mysteries in the Bible.
This represented spiritual warfare as the denominational errors were exposed. Winds symbolize strife and the denominational church world fought against these deeper understandings of the Bible.
The revelation of the opening of the seven seals was a shower of spiritual water from the Word of God that enabled him to restore back the doctrines of the original church of the New Testament.
Some believers would aim at being restored back to the New Testament faith. Others would not.
LUKE 12:55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
South of Israel is the hot Sinai desert. When winds blow towards Israel from the south, they pass over the hot desert sands and the moving air gets hot. Spiritually this represents the heat of persecution. The churches condemned William Branham. Those who take his teachings back to Scripture are condemned by those who major on his quotes, without establishing their ideas by linking up the relevant Bible verses. Finally the great Tribulation will persecute all Christians who were not restored back to the New Testament beliefs.
LUKE 12:56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
We need to be able to discern the crucial events that are happening in the world that indicate that we are in the end time.
We struggle to discern the signs of the times. We cannot even settle legal issues out of court because we cannot admit when we are in the wrong.
LUKE 12:57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
:58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
:59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
Jesus laments on the unwillingness of people to admit their own errors. We cannot admit that we are doctrinally wrong. We are unwilling to admit that we have done things wrong.
Defending error is the main reason that saved Christians are heading for the Tribulation.
