What went wrong in the garden of Eden? Part 1, Genesis Chapter 1

What is wrong with the world today?

Planet earth simply has too many people chasing limited resources and services.

There is no fair distribution of our limited resources. The rich hoard selfishly, consume too much and waste excessively. We poison and pollute the environment to produce many meaningless products and far too many weapons of war. Our biggest businesses are arms and ammunition, crime, drugs, drinking, and smoking. Mismanagement, greed, corruption and gross inefficiency ensure that poverty, unequal distribution of wealth, and depletion of resources will continue. Half the world now lives in our shameful artificial glittering cities, and their nightmarish shadow-land of mass produced squalid  slums and mega slums on the inner or outer urban edges of the cities.  For many this zone is a new Babylon, a life of semi-death as they are effectively exiled from the economic mainstream.  These growing slums are the warehouse or dump for surplus humanity. As Syria has proved, only so many refugees can be absorbed.  Refugee camps easily become slums too. Africa’s slums are growing at twice the speed of her exploding cities. For too many slum dwellers, the cities have no jobs for them.

The rich-poor gap widens as corrupt leadership causes a massive transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. The 2008 financial crisis, the greatest meltdown since the Great Depression of 1929, saw government handing out massive bailout sums of ordinary tax payers’ money to some of the richest people who have ever existed on earth, even though these greedy rich had misbehaved in one way or another. Meanwhile skyrocketing housing costs leave young couples in debt for life. Far too many millions of our people struggle to survive in desperate circumstances. Life is not much fun for them.

Having a lot of people on earth condemns far too many of them to a miserable existence.

The world’s population doubled in the 40 years between 1960 and 2 000 AD from 3 billion to 6 billion people. This rate of increase obviously cannot go on too far into the future.

So sex is producing  a population time bomb. Earth is hardly coping at the moment. There is certainly no long term future in this process if we think in terms of everyone being able to enjoy a comfortable life style. At present 20% of the world’s population is unemployed or underemployed and live in extreme poverty caused by what they call the “disease of the whites” which is the fatal illness of money.

If the Christian God is the true Creator, then this plan of multiplying by sex was not a great success as more than two thirds of the world’s population do not believe in Him today.

Then think of other problems related to sex; Adultery, living in sin, teenage pregnancies, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, prostitution, unwanted children, illegitimacy, divorce, orphans, and the aged who are abandoned. As it was in the days of Sodom.

Then there is the discomfort of pregnancy, morning sickness, the pain and danger and humiliating experience of giving birth.

On the positive side, sex is a rewarding experience between a man and his wife. When childbirth is over, there is the joy of the new arrival.

So sex is the classic example of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

It is the most significant human experience that has an obviously good side, and an awful evil side.

Sex is good within marriage but evil outside of marriage.

It is the only way known to us in order to multiply, but it is a process that will inevitably lead to over population and its serious consequences. Thus it is not a long term viable procedure. But whether sex was used in a good or evil manner, one thing remained obvious, and that is that it cannot produce eternal life.

Surely, at the beginning God had a better idea in mind.

GENESIS 1:12   And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

A fruit tree, for example an apple, produces the seed of life within the fruit.

Each seed has to develop its own specific body.

I CORINTHIANS 15:38  But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

This is going to be of special significance in God’s original plan.

Our problem is to find out how all the physical animals were to multiply by sex and not over populate the world.

GENESIS 1:21   And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

GENESIS 1:22   And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

Physical animals have no free will. They live by instinct that is wired into their brains. A trapdoor spider makes an incredibly intricate nest but cannot make a different kind of nest. Physical animals reproduce by sex but this is governed by instinct whereby the desire in the female is just switched on for a brief time when she was “on heat” and then switched off again. When there were sufficient creatures on planet earth, God could just switch the desire off permanently to prevent over population of each species.

GENESIS 1:21  And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Fish and birds are a special creation. Their bodies are made from the elements of the earth, but God had to create a special spirit or life for the creatures of the sea that could survive in the highly pressured environment under water. Their physical bodies had to be able to survive in a totally different environment to the earth that their bodies were made from. In the book of Revelation a seven-headed evil beast rises up from the sea which we can picture as the highly pressured world of high finance which is an ideal breeding ground for evil spirits. Ask Judas. We cannot serve God and Mammon.

Then God had to do the same thing for the birds so that they could survive in the low pressure circumstances that exist high in the atmosphere.

GENESIS 1:25   And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind…

The bodies of the beasts were simply made from the elements of the earth that they lived on.

When it came to animal life, God simply brought them forth. All these creatures had an instinctive life style hard-wired into their brains which would cause them to live in a pre-determined manner. They had no option but to live by their instincts.

But when it came to man, then God took a very different approach. He deliberated upon the creation of man. He did not just bring man forth. This deliberation as God contemplated the creation of man endows man with a certain dignity. Man is the highest creation of God, and has to be created in God’s image. God’s final goal was actually to dwell in mankind. Satan is happy to live in animals like the pigs of Gedara, but God only wants to live in mankind.

JOHN 4: 24  God is a Spirit.

So the image of God would be a small spirit.

This had to be created from nothing because a spirit cannot be made from the dust of the earth.

This spirit-man had to be like God, so man had to have free will. God did not want man to be forced to obey God, He wanted man to serve God of his own free will.

So in Genesis Chapter 1 God creates an invisible spirit-man from nothing. He does not form man from the dust. Thus we are not dealing with a physical man of flesh. All the animals were in physical bodies. These animals had to multiply by sex.

But God, to grant man free will and to avoid the problems of overpopulation, had a different plan in mind for human multiplication. Imagine if mankind had free will and could have as many children as they wanted and this process was to continue for all eternity! Crushing multitudes would make life impossible on a limited planet like earth. But if God switched off the sexual desire in mankind, as He does in animals, then man would not have free will.

So unlike animals, if God is to give man free will, then God had to put man into an environment in which he would have to choose between different options. If there was no wrong option for man to choose from, then man would not have the free will of choice. So God, in order to create free will, had to offer man a tempting alternative and then hope that man loved God enough not to choose the alternative.

Let us consider the spirit-man that God created.

JOHN 4: 24  God is a Spirit.

GENESIS 1:26   And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Many Christians take the word “us” to mean a Trinity God of three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. None of these three is a woman.

But this hits a problem if God creates a man and a woman, two people, on earth.

GENESIS 1:27   So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Two people on earth, one being a woman, cannot be the image of three People in Heaven, none of whom are a woman.

Drawing0-1

This picture is obviously wrong. Why? It is a mixture of three Spirits in Heaven and the physical flesh of two people on earth.

Human flesh is not the image of God’s Spirit. The human spirit is the image of God’s Spirit.

Let us rather look at Chapter 1 purely in terms of spirit.

The word “us” when applied to the flesh implies more than one person.

But we are dealing with the spirit here. The human spirit is very complex.

You can argue with your own conscience but that does not make you two people.

NEHEMIAH 5:7   Then I consulted with myself,

Nehemiah was not consulting with another person. Nor was David.

PSALM 77:6   … I commune with mine own heart:

Scientists have discovered that we all spend a lot of time talking to ourselves as this helps us to clarify our jumbled thoughts.

In language there is also the rather unusual  “royal we”.

Kings, Popes, and even bishops, use “we” instead of “I”.

The “we” expresses the fullness of their power and majesty which a singular word cannot fully describe.

A letter was written to king Artaxerxes as an individual. The word “him” means it was not written to the king and his councillors. The letter was just written to the king.

EZRA 4:11   This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king;

Notice the king’s reply.

EZRA 4:18   The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

The word “me” confirms the king as an individual. The “us” is simply a form of the “royal we” whereby kings and Popes have traditionally described themselves.

So God, as King of the universe that He created, is more than entitled to use a form of the “royal we” to describe Himself.

Drawing1-4

GENESIS 1:27   So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The Spirit of God created a human spirit as an image of His own infinite Spirit.

Where did these human attributes come from?

JOB 38:4   Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

JOB 38:7 … and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

All the sons of God were at the creation of the earth. This is only possible if we were all originally in the mind of God. The mind is the spirit that uses our brain cells. At the beginning, before he was placed into a physical body, Adam’s mind was pure spirit. So humanity, our human attributes, were somewhere in the mind of God, waiting to be later placed into separate physical bodies. In the same manner the feminine attributes of the future bride of Adam, were somewhere in the mind of Adam, waiting to be placed into a separate body. The woman had no conscious memory of this time. We have no memory of being in God at the creation of the world. But we were there and subconsciously rejoiced as He began to create our future home. You do not recall being in your father when he was young, but you were in him as a sperm cell. You were waiting for your mother to provide you with a separate body.

Drawing12-1

At this stage Adam was basically a masculine spirit with feminine attributes in him. The feminine attributes had no awareness of what was going on. It was now that God mentions that humans must multiply. But this refers to spiritual multiplication as there were no human bodies present. So God did not intend this process to have anything to do with sex.

GENESIS 1:28   And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

How did God expect this multiplication to occur since He is speaking to a spirit-man? The clue lies in the spiritual meaning of “fruitful”.

GENESIS 1:12   … and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

“Fruitful” refers to a fruit whose seed is in itself.

What does this mean?

Elisabeth spoke to the pregnant Mary

LUKE 1:42   And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

LUKE 8:11   Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

The fruit of the womb is a baby.

God wants the spirit of man to bring forth a virgin born Child that has the fullness of the Word of God in the Child. This Child would be the Seed of eternal Life.

The Child would grow up to be a Man with free will who would obey God in all ways and thus never sin. Only then would death not enter Paradise.

This adult Man would then speak His saints out of the dust of the earth, and breathe into each one a portion of His Holy Spirit until He had just the right number to populate the earth. Then He would stop creating humans. The spiritual multiplication of mankind would be complete.

There would be no nasty people who would have to burn in hell.

Sex would never come into the picture. Nor would death.

As a matter of interest, it is only the species that multiply by sex that die.

It was impossible for the spirit-man Adam to produce this Child, so he knew that all he could do was wait until somehow God brought His own plan to pass. This was mankind’s first test. Exhibit enough patience to wait on God until He fulfills His Word.

God had made all sorts of plants with plant life in them and all sorts of animals with animal life in them. Plants and animals cannot sin so there was no reason for the plants and animals to die. But plants and animals have their life style hard-wired into their brains as instinct. They have no choice.

Now God wanted something very different. He wanted to make a Tabernacle of human hearts so that He could dwell in the hearts of His people. He did not just want to make a group of humans who had human life in them, as if they were just the highest form of animal life. He wanted humans to have free will choices and to serve Him of their own free will. This was a great risk because free will meant that there had to be alternative bad choices that they were allowed to make. Doing wrong is sin, and sin would bring in death. To develop free choice, God had to offer them both good and evil. Before He did that, God first had to train up Adam in a safe spiritual environment where Adam could learn the truth and discern between right and wrong.

Please note that there is no reference to a tree of knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 1. While Adam was a spirit Satan could not harm him, because Adam could see spirits and would know an evil spirit when he saw it.

GENESIS 1:29   And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

God made fruit trees for them to eat in the future. This verse 29 is prophetic. “to you it shall be for meat”. Later on God will place them in physical bodies which will require them to eat food. That food is already available as the fruit from the fruit trees.

“and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed”. Every fruit tree was good. There was no harm in eating from any natural fruit tree. Adam was not told to avoid apple trees as all fruit trees were good.

GENESIS 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

There is no prophecy that green herbs shall be for food. “I have given”. It is already happening. All the animals were already in bodies of flesh. Their necessary food was all the green herbs, to be eaten by lions and lambs. There were no predators, no flesh eaters in those days.

GENESIS 1:31   And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Adam was a spirit being. Nothing could harm him. All the physical creation, all the fruit trees, were very good. Adam’s spirit could not be harmed by physical things. There was, as yet, no tree of the knowledge of good and evil as every thing was very good.
